Portrait Retouch is the whole beauty panel of the image workbench (?tool=beauty). Its “Smoothing & whitening (manual)” area needs no face detection at all: drag “Smoothing” 0–100% (an edge-preserving, high-pass smoothing that blurs away fine lines and noise but keeps contours) and “Whitening” 0–100% (a lift of the midtones), and about 350ms after you let go the whole image is previewed; when it looks right, click “Apply to base image” to bake it in. The other three areas are entry points: Smart Beauty's Auto Beauty button, “Brighten eyes / Whiten teeth”, and the “Retouch tools” group with “Open the liquify tool (slim face / bigger eyes)” and “Remove acne and spots (small Erase Brush)” — the last one jumps to the Erase Brush, switches it to texture-preserving mode and sets the brush to 20px. The work is done locally in your browser.

Manual mode covers the entire image rather than the skin alone, so background texture gets a light smoothing too; if you want only the face smoothed, use Auto Beauty, or paint out a region first in the spirit of “Local Adjust”.

For profile shots, hats or low-resolution photos, smooth the skin with the manual sliders.
Set smoothing to 20 and an entire portrait looks softer.
Leave smoothing at 0 and set whitening to 30.
Smooth by hand first, then hop from the panel to liquify and spot removal.
Auto Beauty smooths only within the face skin polygon and excludes eyes, brows and lips; manual mode works on the entire image but never needs a detected face.
So that every drag does not trigger a recompute, the preview runs 350ms after you let go; large images take longer because there is more to calculate.
It is the “Remove acne and spots (small Erase Brush)” button under “Retouch tools” at the bottom of the panel, and it jumps to the Erase Brush in texture-preserving mode.
Smoothing and whitening are computed locally in your browser, and photos are never uploaded to any server; manual mode loads no model at all — only clicking Auto Beauty or the eye and teeth buttons fetches the face model file from this site.
